An earthquake in the eastern Chinese city of Fuyang has damaged more than 10,000 homes and killed at least two people, according to authorities.

The quake struck in the Anhui province city on Saturday afternoon, and 13 people also were injured, officials in the city said. The US Geological Survey said the quake measured magnitude 4.7.

Damage to more than 4,000 of the homes was serious and 155 collapsed, the city’s Communist party propaganda department said.

Fuyang is a city of about 10 million people in a region that relies on coal mining and agriculture.

Earthquake shakes central Mexico, no initial reports of damage

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - An earthquake struck Mexico on Friday, shaking buildings in the capital and sending people running out of offices onto the streets, but there were no immediate reports of damage.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake had a magnitude of 5.5 with its epicenter 15 miles south of Chiautla in the central state of Puebla, at a depth of 44.9 miles (72 km).

Authorities in southern Mexico said the quake was also felt there, but emergency services in Puebla said there were no immediate reports of damage in the state.

SYDNEY (AP) — A powerful earthquake rattled the South Pacific nation of Papua New Guinea on Monday, generating a small tsunami and frightening locals near the epicenter, but prompting no reports of damage or injuries.

A tsunami of half a meter (1.5 feet) was measured in the harbor of Rabaul, a town near the epicenter of the magnitude-7.7 earthquake, said Martin Mose, acting director for Papua New Guinea's National Disaster Center. The quake struck at a depth of 65 kilometers (40 miles), about 50 kilometers (30 miles) southeast of the town of Kokopo, near Rabaul, in northeastern Papua New Guinea, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center had warned that tsunami waves up to 3 meters (10 feet) could strike parts of Papua New Guinea, and waves of less than 0.3 meters (1 foot) could hit other Pacific countries, as far north as Russia. The center lifted the warning a few hours later, after reporting a 3-centimeter (1-inch) tsunami wave was measured at a wharf in the Solomon Islands, about 450 kilometers (280 miles) from the epicenter.

In Rabaul, residents noticed the sea level rose slightly, prompting ocean water to flood the parking lot of a shopping center near the beach, said Mika Tuvi, an employee at the Rabaul Hotel. "But nothing beyond that — no damage caused," she said.

When the quake struck, guests and workers at the hotel fled outside, fearing the building would collapse, Tuvi said. The tremors, which lasted for about 5 minutes, were frightening in their intensity, but the hotel withstood the shaking, she said.

Officials in the capital, Port Moresby, were working to contact their counterparts in the outer provinces, but hours after the quake, there still had been no reports of damage or injuries, said Mose, of the national disaster center. He said he was confident the nation had averted a major catastrophe.

The quake caused strong shaking and knocked items off shelves in Kokopo, and was felt 800 kilometers (500 miles) away in Port Moresby, said Chris McKee, assistant director of the Geophysical Observatory in Port Moresby.

Earthquakes are common in Papua New Guinea. The country lies on the "Ring of Fire" — an arc of earthquake and volcanic activity that stretches around the Pacific Rim

Sharp at around the same time 23:00 GMT I will be boarding Air India flight from Cochin to Delhi with my family and please pray that nothing happens in India. I would very much like to warn the Airport about such an eventuality, but I am afraid to do so since if nothing happens, I will land up in Tihar Jail.

Anyway thanks GVT for the warning. I will get back to you later if am still alive. I am giving the strength of the 12 houses at Cochin at the appointed time and it looks to me that it is a very auspicious time for Indians in Cochin at large.

Japan earthquake: Magnitude 8.5 quake strikes off east coast

Japan earthquake: Magnitude 8.5 quake strikes off east coast
No tsunami danger or immediate damage
The Associated Press Posted: May 30, 2015 8:53 AM ET Last Updated: May 30, 2015 9:12 AM ET

A magnitude 8.5 earthquake struck off the east coast of Japan on Saturday, shaking buildings in Tokyo, but there was no danger of a tsunami and no immediate reports of damage since the quake was extremely deep.

There were no reports of further irregularities at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant, damaged four years ago in a massive 9.0 magnitude quake, or any other nuclear facilities.

The Shinkansen high speed train line had briefly stopped between Tokyo and Osaka due a power outage.

The quake, centered off the Ogasawara islands south of Tokyo, occurred at a depth of 590 kilometres and, unusually, was felt throughout much of Japan.

"It shook violently. Our Buddhist altar swayed sideways wildly," Michiko Orita, a resident of the island of Hahajima, near the epicentre, told NHK national television. "I have not experienced anything like that, so it was so scary."

She added that things on the island were normal.

There were no immediate reports of significant damage or injuries, though the Tokyo Fire Department had received calls of people suffering injuries through falls, NHK said.

In Chiba, just east of Tokyo, loudspeaker broadcasts called on people to remain calm, but there were no reports of damage.

"Since it was magnitude 8.5 this was a very big quake, but fortunately it was very deep at 590 km," Naoki Hirata, an earthquake expert at the University of Tokyo's Earthquake Research Centre, told NHK.

"But the shaking was felt over a broad area... Fortunately, because it was deep, there is little danger of a tsunami."

Tokyo Electric Power Co said there were no abnormalities at the crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant following the quake.

On March 11, 2011, a massive 9.0 magnitude quake touched off a tsunami that left nearly 20,000 people dead and nuclear meltdowns at the Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear plant.

Japan, one of the world's most seismically-active nations, has been seeing a period of unusual activity over the last year or so. In September 2014, 63 people were killed in the eruption of Mount Ontake, a volcano in central Japan.

On Friday, at the end of a week marked by several earthquakes in Tokyo, a volcano on the remote southern island of Kuchinoerabujima erupted, forcing the evacuation of the island's entire population. Volcanic activity has also picked up at a resort area not far from Tokyo.
